Urban Ministries
Located in the center city of Mobile, Alabama, Government Street Presbyterian Church extends God's love to people who are poor and homeless in the Mobile area. For more information about our urban ministry programs and how to get involved, email the church office.
Meals on Wheels provides meals for elderly and indigent residents of the downtown area Monday through Friday.
McKemie Place Lunches: Volunteers are needed on the second Friday of each month to provide lunch for about 20-25 ladies. McKemie Place is a residence program where homeless women receive not only shelter, food and counseling, but also assistance in various ways to get their life back to “normal.” Each team will plan the menu, deciding who prepares which part(s) of the menu. It may be the entrée, dessert, salad, beverage, etc. The team may go together to McKemie Place on Azalea Road, where they will set up and serve the meal. (Remember, this is a lunch, not a full dinner.)
The best part of this volunteer task is twofold: First, the contact and conversation with the ladies in residence and the staff, and seeing their gratitude; second, the relationship built between the volunteers, strengthening friendships within the congregation. Either way, this is a rewarding time well spent as we follow the command to feed the poor.
Volunteers are asked to begin serving by 11:30 a.m. and are usually finished by 12:30 or 1 p.m. If you can help on October 10 or November 14, please call Lisa deShazo at 251-591-1077 or Mary DeWitt Dukes at 504-920-1918.
Seeking a 12-Step Program Host: The Mission Committee is searching for a volunteer with AA-12 step program history to host a new program at GSPC. This will be a weekly commitment. The committee will help with providing books and meeting space to get this program up and running. If you have the knowledge and interest, please contact Neal Horner or Lynn McDaniel.
