Sally and I have been married 37 years. We have two grown sons, Preston and Edward. Edward and his wife Katherine live in Florence, Alabama with our first grandchild who is 18 months old. Preston is single and lives in central Florida. Sally and I were both raised in Presbyterian homes. Sally grew up in Virginia; I grew up in Birmingham. I am a graduate of Woodlawn High School and Samford University. I graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia in 1976 with a Doctorate in Ministry.
The first quarter of my career in ministry was as a hospital chaplain and pastoral counselor. Then I became the director of pastoral care and counseling at a large church and the pastor of a medium sized church. I retired as the pastor of the Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church in Birmingham in May, 2015. Beginning in August, 2015, for eighteen months, I was the interim pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama. I have served two, short term interim pastorates in Birmingham - one at the Shades Valley Lutheran Church and a second at Chapel in the Pines (PCUSA).
I enjoy working as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. I love to read, mostly light adventure novels. If I have a hobby it is going to the movies. Sally and I try to plan one trip a year to a place we have not been. Often the trip is with Sally’s church choir at Independent Presbyterian Church.
