World Mission

 

Government Street Presbyterian Church annually contributes $69,541 to PCUSA mission which supports the work of South Alabama Presbytery, national, and global ministries.

 

The operating budget of the General Assembly is $124 million, of which $43 million is devoted to supporting worldwide ministries. There are 643 volunteer and compensated mission workers worldwide.

 

Government Street Presbyterian Church also receives special offerings annually for Disaster Relief through the One Great Hour of Sharing at Easter and the Joy Gift at Christmas for minority education and retired ministers. Other special offerings are received at various times for local and international projects.

 

Government Street Presbyterian Church sponsors the Mission Market at Christmas to support projects like Habitat for Humanity, the Heifer Project International, Family Promise's Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN,) Presbyterian Home for Children, Coffee Club and like ministries. Members are invited to make donations to these projects in lieu of personal gifts. Donations are acknowledged to specified recipients.

 

Extra mission commitments are funded through Mission Jubilee held annually in February and March.

 

Historically, GSPC supports several missionary families; among them are Frank and Nancy Dimmock in Malawi and Dan and Elizabeth Turk in Madagascar.

 

Through its Mission Committee, GSPC sponsors forums each fall and spring on a variety of issues of local and national interest. Government Street Forums are held for ten weeks in the fall on Thursdays from 12-1 p.m. and for fourteen weeks each spring.

 

 

Urban Mission

 

Urban ministries are central to the outreach of GSPC. In addition to countless volunteer hours, $75,000 annually is committed to the following projects:

 

  • ADOPT-A-SCHOOL In partnership with Mobile County Training School in Prichard, GSPC provides teaching materials, computers, printers, furniture, lawn equipment, hygiene kits,     school supplies and clothing to middle school students in support of their education.

 

  • BREAD DELIVERY Bread used daily for Coffee Club and Meals on Wheels is purchased and delivered by 10 loyal volunteers each month. Meal programs consume 400-500 loaves of bread a month.

 

  • COFFEE CLUB For twenty-four years GSPC has provided breakfast to the homeless and poor of Mobile. 80-120 guests are welcome each day, five days a week, 52 weeks a year. Approximately 25,000 meals are served annually. Some 30 dedicated volunteers serve meals prepared by our kitchen staff. Special programs are presented on Good Friday, at Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

 

  • INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORKIn 2002, GSPC earmarked $100,000 for the start up of this ministry to homeless families, which now involves 14 network churches and some 600 volunteers county-wide. Some 65 GSPC members provide meals, hospitality and care to families four weeks each year.

 

  • LOAVES AND FISH Every fourth Monday, five members serve lunch to homeless men and women at 15 Place.

 

  • MEALS ON WHEELS GSPC partners with First Baptist to provide daily meals for some 50 elderly and indigent residents of the center city. GSPC has 23 regular drivers and 6 substitutes.

 

  • RICHARD MIGHELL DAY CAMP Housed at Baytreat, this day camp provides Vacation Bible School for underprivileged children. Ten or more volunteers annually log 240 volunteer hours through this effort held each June.

 

  • URBAN MISSION CAMPSThis long-running ministry welcomes high school and college students nationwide at Baytreat each summer. Campers participate in a variety of urban ministries during their week-long stay and are provided Bible study and worship times for reflection.

 

  • VICTORY HEALTH PARTNERS - GSPC provides funding for this ministry led by Dr. Robert Lightfoot which serves over 7,000 patients annually who are not covered by traditional  insurance plans. Offices are located at 3750 Professional Parkway.
