Volunteer
Opportunities
COFFEE CLUB * Weekday early morning opportunity
For twenty-three years GSPC has provided breakfast to
the homeless and poor of Mobile. 80–120 guests are welcome each day five days a
week, fifty-two weeks a year. Approximately 25,000 meals are served annually.
Some 30 dedicated volunteers serve meals prepared by our kitchen staff. Special
programs are presented on Good Friday, at Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Communion
is served on Wednesdays before GSPC communion.
Volunteers arrive at 7:00
a.m. and help serve breakfast until 8:00 a.m.
MEALS ON WHEELS * Weekday opportunity
GSPC partners with First Baptist to provide daily
meals– a bag lunch and a hot dinner— for some 50 elderly and indigent residents
of the downtown area. GSPC has 23 regular drivers and 6 substitutes.
Approximately 11,000 meals are served annually.
Volunteers are regularly
scheduled drivers, or substitute drivers for one of GSPC’s three downtown
routes.
LOAVES AND FISH * Weekday opportunity
Every fourth Monday five members serve lunch to
homeless men and women at 15 Place.
Volunteers work on a rotation
schedule.
BREAD DELIVERY * Weekday opportunity
Bread used daily for Coffee Club and Meals on Wheels
is purchased and delivered by 10 loyal volunteers each month. Meal programs
consume 400-500 loaves of bread a month.
Volunteers can be scheduled
or “on call” to pick up 40-50 loaves of bread from the discount bread store and
deliver it to GSPC.
ADOPT-A-SCHOOL * Afternoon / Weekend opportunity
In partnership with Mobile County Training School in
Prichard, GSPC provides teaching materials, computers, printers, furniture, lawn
equipment, hygiene kits, school supplies and clothing to middle school students
in support of their education.
Volunteers deliver
collected items, and help canvas and promote this cause when the school year
begins.
INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK * Evening and week-end opportunity
In 2002 GSPC earmarked $100,000 for the start up of
this ministry to homeless families, which now involves 14 networked churches and
some 600 volunteers county-wide. Some 65 GSPC members provide meals, hospitality
and care to families four weeks each year.
Volunteers help with the
following:
° set-up
for the families’ arrival
prepare a supper for the guest families
visit from 5:30-8:30 p.m. with the guests
are part of an overnight team
launder a bag of linens after departure
help with break-down and clean up
